BE Civil Engineering

The degree program is designed to meet the huge unsatisfied demand for sustainable Civil Engineers with special emphasis on basic civil engineering theory and practical training. Particular attention is paid to the overgrowing fields of Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Geographical Information Systems Engineering, Mass Transit and Railway Engineering, Construction Engineering and Management, Geotechnical Engineering and Water Resources Engineering. The curriculum is designed to provide undergraduates with a solid foundation on fundamental principles of basic sciences including Mathematics, Management Sciences, Engineering Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Theory of Structures, Survey, Architecture, Computer Sciences, Fluid Mechanics, Hydraulics, Soil Mechanics, Concrete Technology, Transportation Engineering, and Public Health Engineering and then use this knowledge to solve practical Civil Engineering problems.

BE Software Engineering

Software Engineering is the discipline of creating high-quality software environment in a systematic, controlled and efficient manner. The department of Computer Science, College of Telecommunication Engineering (MCS) has developed/tailored its courses based on current needs/requirements of the society. The Software Engineering Program involves the application of engineering concepts, techniques, and methods to develop the software systems. The BE Software Engineering program provides specialization in two main streams, namely Computer Software Engineering and Computer Network Security. The first four semesters are common for both streams; afterwards bifurcation will be made on the basis of student’s academic performance in various subjects and willingness. Whereas, courses related to specialization will be introduced in last four semesters.

 

BE Electrical (Telecommunication) Engineering

The program is essentially built on the fundamental electrical engineering principles with special emphasis on electronics, electromagnetic theory, microwave, fiber optics, digital design and computer networking and diagnostics. Particular attention is paid to the overgrowing field of telecommunication, especially line of sight systems, switching principles and communication planning. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a solid foundation on fundamental principles and then transfer this knowledge to practical design projects and manufacturing process.

BE Electrical Engineering

The program is based on fundamental principles and practical applications of electrical engineering. Emphasis is on circuits and systems, electronics, electromagnetic, antennas, transmission lines, microwave, control systems, computer networking, communication system, signal processing, microprocessors and computer systems. The syllabus also covers aspects of mathematics, physics, chemistry, mechanics, engineering drawing, workshop practice, essential mechanical engineering subjects and set of courses in economics and management. The course culminates into a final semester project that reflects the skills acquired by the students during their Bachelors study.

 
BE Computer Engineering

The objective of the course is to produce graduates who have necessary technical skills in computer hardware and software knowledge to develop integrated real-world systems with computer as the main processing element. The program is structured in such a manner that the students are provided with a firm theoretical foundation with opportunity to strengthen their knowledge through research assignments, practical training and projects. The course is designed to meet the growing demand of computer professionals who are competent in electronic engineering, systems engineering and computer sciences.

 
BE Mechanical Engineering

The program is designed to inculcate a comprehensive understanding of theory and practice related to structural mechanics, thermo fluids and manufacturing. The curriculum is designed to provide students with broad intellectual tools and skills in multi-disciplinary areas including electrical engineering, mechatronics, computational engineering, mathematics and management sciences. The mechanical engineering program is a unique blend of engineering sciences with well-balanced laboratory work, design project and manufacturing processes with extensive usage of computers and the latest software packages.

 
BE Mechatronics Engineering

Mechatronics refers to a flexible, multi-technological approach for the integration of mechanical engineering, computer engineering, electronics and information sciences. Mechatronics is essential in the design of intelligent products. It allows engineers to transform their virtual concept into real life applications. The mechatronics program of NUST involves research and coursework that will push the frontier of technology in intelligent product design and development. The research activities involve the design and control of intelligent robotic systems and automated machines.

BE Electrical Engineering

The course is designed to meet the dictates of modern trends in the field of electrical technology, encompassing wider technological perspective. The program includes basic sciences and humanities courses, electrical, electronics, microwave, signal processing, control systems, communications, microprocessor and computer courses, with final semester heavily biased towards power generation and distribution. The strong element of electrical power enables the graduate engineer to take on his job effectively in power generation and distribution sector. With a significant design element of 6 credit hours for project work, students are able to apply their theoretical knowledge into research and development activities.

 
BE Electronics Engineering

The program is built on strong fundamentals enabling graduates to meet the challenges of contemporary engineering fields of electronics, with engineering foundation. The curriculum lays strong stress on laboratory-based practicals to consolidate theoretical knowledge. The courses of basic sciences, humanities, electronics, electrical signals and systems, control engineering, digital signal processing, communication and microwave engineering form important pillars of this program. BE Mechanical Engineering

The undergraduate program attempts to provide students with the broad intellectual tools and skills, which are essential for professional practice as well as for continuing further studies in all engineering specialties. The program emphasizes a sound understanding of the fundamental principles and the behaviour of engineering systems. The course is a unique blend of engineering system that brings an integration of engineering sciences with laboratory, design projects and manufacturing processes.

 
BE Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

The field of industrial and manufacturing engineering is inherently practical in nature; and unless academic and practical applications go hand in hand, the young engineers cannot be successful in their professional careers. The program is designed to build up comprehensive understanding of fundamentals of engineering practices, manufacturing processes, control systems and CAD/CAM, etc. It also provides students with broad intellectual tools and skills of production technology, TQM, Ergonomics, Operational Research and Computer Integrated Manufacturing, which are essential for professional engineers. The course is a unique blend of industrial and manufacturing engineering systems that integrates engineering sciences with laboratories. Two internships in industry and 6 credit hour project work provide the students a platform to demonstrate their competence in acquired methodologies and skills to enhance real-time industrial and manufacturing performance.

BE Aerospace Engineering (Mechanical Engineering for Aviation)

The Aerospace Engineering program is administered under four sub-divisions: Aerodynamics, Structures, Propulsion and Mechanics. Students join the department on completion of two semesters of preparatory coursework in Humanities and Science Department. They complete a total of 140.5 credit hours of academic work that includes an independent project in the final semester. The coursework is integrated in such a way that students are able to work on the design of an aircraft towards the end of this degree program. Students are also taught many subjects related to industrial engineering during their stay in the department.

 
BE Avionics (Electronics Engineering for Aviation)

Avionics Engineering program is designed with an objective to instil in students the knowledge and perspective appropriate both for a professional career and pursuit of advanced degrees in the fields that rely on fundamental principles of electrical engineering. Such principles and practices include rigorous quantitative reasoning and robust engineering design. This is accomplished by ensuring that students achieve both depth and breadth of knowledge in their studies and by maintaining a high degree of flexibility in the curriculum.
This program also seeks to provide a good preparation for life, including an ability to communicate in written and oral forms, and a desire to continue learning throughout life. Subjects offered in Avionics Engineering curriculum are divided in six different groups namely Circuits & Power Electronics, EM, Microwave & Antenna, Communications, Digital & Embedded Systems, Guidance, Navigation & Control and Radar & Avionics Systems.
Students join the department on completion of two semesters of preparatory coursework in Humanities and Sciences department, which is common for all students. Many subjects related to industrial engineering are also taught to the students during their stay in the department. A total of 138.5 Credit hours of academic work are completed that includes an independent project in the final semester.

The syllabus includes subjects like basic sciences, humanities, fluid mechanics, hydraulics, survey, computer science, microbiology, electrical technology, water & wastewater treatment and numerical analysis, etc. The undergraduate degree will make the students eligible for admission to postgraduate programs (i.e., MS and PhD in Environmental Engineering) at NUST or elsewhere. Bachelor in Electrical Engineering (BEE)

Electrical Engineering encompasses a broad spectrum of technical areas, including electronics & integrated circuits, digital systems & computers, communication systems, controls systems & electromagnetic & electro-optics, signal processing & robotics and energy conversion & power distribution.

Electrical Engineers are required to find innovative ways to use electricity, electric material and electrical phenomena to design, develop, manufacture and maintain electrical systems. Society uses complex engineering systems in general and electrical system in particular as vehicles for economic and social development of the citizens. Electrical Engineers are important members of the society who directly contribute to societal development by utilizing the engineering knowledge and skills.

The Electrical Engineering department at NUST School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (SEECS) prepares the students to become professional electrical engineers, by imparting knowledge in core electrical engineering subjects coupled with focused education in five sub-specializations, namely: Electronics, Computer Systems, Control Systems, Telecommunications and Power Systems.
 

Bachelor in Information Technology (BIT)
The mission of BIT program is to prepare students as professionals by imparting high quality education in the field of computing with emphasis on information technology. Graduates of the program take appropriate IT professional positions in industry and organizations, or pursue higher education and research in related disciplines.

BIT curriculum inculcates a sound knowledge of fundamentals of computing and mathematics appropriate to IT discipline. It develops skills in students for applying the concepts, principles, and practices in information technology for analyzing and solving real world problems to support users and meeting their organizational needs. The students are provided effective personal development and team-work skills for continuing professional growth and life-long learning and awareness of their social, professional and ethical responsibilities in national and international environment.

The program offers appreciably diverse coverage of all related subjects like Computer Communication and Networking, Information Systems, Software Development and Web Technologies with an adequate number of management, marketing and finance courses. The curriculum has well-blended combination of courses with knowledge and hands-on experience to take care of both an organization’s information technology infrastructure and the people who use it. Apart from coursework the students are provided ample internship opportunities with appropriate commercial and industrial organizations which equip them with a set of dynamic skills to enter the world of opportunities.

 
Bachelor in Information and Communication Systems Engineering (BICSE)
The recent advances in communication and information technology have turned this world into a global village where people are enabled to any kind of information instantaneously, i.e. they can inter-communicate with each other at any time and can have immediate access to any information resources. This access is enabled by the deployment of optical and wireless networks and the roll-out of a host of services such as mobile telephony, mobile internet access, Voice over IP and IP television.

BICSE is a state-of-the-art program which provides students with the necessary skills leading to confluence of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and students are trained to lead developments in this area. The degree is essentially a mixture of information and communications engineering which blends appropriate knowledge of information systems, communication engineering, electronics, mathematics, signal processing and computer engineering. Emphasis is given on practical learning and new and improved labs have been established which provide hands on experience especially in the fields of Digital Signal Processing (DSP), Communication Systems, FPGA Based System Design and Microwave and Antenna. The program prepares students for a wide range of interesting positions at the heart of the cutting edge, dynamic ICT industry of today where BICSE graduates will use their skills in designing and building the next generation of devices and networks to keep improving connectivity worldwide.

BE Chemical Engineering

Chemical Engineering is process engineering. Its primary theme resides in the designing of industrial processes which revolve around rigorous application of thermodynamics, kinetics and transport phenomena at its core. The undergraduate program is heavily doped with mathematics, computer applications, process diagnostics and instrumentation to facilitate plant design and unit operations. Fertilizer, petroleum, mining, pharmaceutical, syn fuels, polymers, ceramics and composites, defence and aerospace are the lead chemical industries. From the refinery output to doping of silicon wafers to produce solar cells to catalytic converters in automobiles, there is hardly any segment of human life that is not touched by the products that emerge from these industries.

Chemical engineers are at the forefront in solving major issues concerning energy and environment today. Therefore, our undergraduate program offers relevant elective streams in the areas of energetic materials, biochemical and nuclear engineering. The program is designed to produce robust and well-rounded engineers who will benchmark against world -class competitors.

 
BE Materials Engineering

 Materials Engineering is arguably the most important engineering discipline today. Starting from the study of structure, composition and properties of materials it covers the manufacturing and processes details. There is also a very strong interdependence between Materials Engineering, Surface Engineering and Industrial Engineering. The Materials Engineering program includes extensive training & education about engineering materials as well as two majors to be undertaken in the third and fourth year, namely Surface Engineering & Industrial Engineering. A strong component of managerial courses, an industrial internship and a 6 credit hour design project in the final year are also included to make Materials Engineers fit for industry and research.

(Specialization in Industrial Engineering and Manufacturing Management)

Modern mechanical engineers use sophisticated computer-aided design and engineering skills to ensure the reliability, efficiency and economics of the products. There is an increasing shortage of trained graduates with technical, analytical, business and interpersonal skills. The manufacturing industry has led the world in innovation for almost a century, and its operations are now firmly integrated with computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering. Our program in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Manufacturing provides skill, knowledge and understanding in the areas of computer-based technologies and innovative design processes. These are associated with current and future generations of machines and engineers with broad-based mechanical engineering expertise coupled with manufacturing knowledge. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)

The 5-year MBBS program is a blend of bio-medical and clinical sciences which are traditionally required for medical graduates to meet the responsibilities of providing preventive as well as curative healthcare. In order to achieve the objective of producing a high degree of professionalism in the doctors, it has been considered appropriate to follow the curriculum prescribed by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council with some flexibility. The course lays comparatively greater emphasis on clinical and on the job training during the final year.

 
Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS)

The four-year degree program of BDS meets the requirements of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. It is a combination of hardcore subjects of dentistry with medical and basic sciences. Clinical training in the dental disciplines is imparted at the Armed Forces Institute of Dentistry (AFID) which is equipped with modern facilities in the field. The specifically designed program aims at exposing the students to real life problems including radical art in clinical dental practice. The students are provided with a solid foundation of basic principles of medicine, diagnostics and surgical techniques to meet the challenges of the future in the field of dentistry.

BS in Virology and Immunology

Through this program, solid foundations will be laid for the future virologists to study Pakistani and regional DNA and RNA virus(es), their life cycle, structure/gene expression, replication, assembly, attachment, entry, coupled with development of antiviral therapies, use of viral antigens as vaccines, and viral vectors for gene delivery. Additional focus will be on application of disparate data sources towards integrated bio-defence and identification of novel epidemic indications and warnings as well as a research in the field of remotely-sensed epidemic surveillance. Cost effective and sensitive assays will be developed to rapidly detect the presence of viruses in blood, semen and saliva of infected individuals in Pakistan. The program syllabus also includes Immunology-based investigations that will provide novel clues in combating the complications of strain specific viral-induced pathogenesis, autoimmune diseases, type 1/2 diabetes, leukaemia, lymphoma and solid tumour.

NUST Business School (NBS), Islamabad
 
Bachelor of Business Administration--BBA (Hons)

The four years program has been designed to equip future managers with the basic tools and techniques of strategic management. Students can specialize in one of the two disciplines offered at NBS. After successfully completing 136 credits of BBA (Hons), the students interested in pursuing MA program at NBS will be given credit for some of the modules for MBA enabling them to complete the coursework in one year, followed by research thesis and internship.

In BBA (Hons) program, specialization is offered in International Business & Marketing and Finance and Investment.

 
BS Economics

The key feature of BS Economics at NBS which distinguishes this program from traditional economics degrees is that it prepares students for a specialized field with strong theoretical and practical knowledge. Thus studying economics at NBS is about developing problem-solving skills, including mathematical and statistical techniques as well as more general analytical skills.

The core coursework of the economics undergraduate curriculum is designed to equip students with an understanding of basic microeconomic, macroeconomics, economic growth and development, and the impact of fiscal and monetary policies. Students will then build on this foundation through further study in upper-level electives from within one of three fields of specialization in economics which are at present the immediate needs of the economy of Pakistan (i.e., Finance, Public Policy and Labor Economics). Apart from special emphasis on understanding of core theoretical concepts of economics other distinguishing features of BS Economics Include:
 

  • Analyzing and Critical thinking
    This program will develop critical thinking skills through application of economic theories in real world economic problems and issues. It will also help to understand how individuals and institutions interact to generate outcomes for the economy as a whole.
  • Development of Quantitative Skills
    Pursuit of this curriculum allow students to acquire the ability to conduct data analysis using statistical packages as applicable; and the understanding of different quantitative techniques and tools to work effectively.

  • Research
    This coursework will expose our young economists to the current issues of the area, as well as give them an understanding of the tools needed to undertake research in the areas of interest. The final year BS economics students are also encouraged to attend and participate in doctoral seminar series.
