1ST ANNUAL HCV MANAGEMENT SYMPOSIUM
10th - 11th February, 2011
NUST CENTER OF VIROLOGY & IMMUNOLOGY
NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY
|
OBJECTIVE
Epidemics of HCV have plagued the entire developing world including Pakistan and
HCV associated diseases impose heavy burdens on national economies and individual
families due to costs arising from acute and chronic morbidity and mortality. There
are many scientific studies that outline the important factors contributing to HCV
spread but these have not reached to the public at large. These include; unsafe
use of therapeutic injections, blood transfusion, shaving from barbers, tattooing,
mother to child transmission unsafe sexual practices. Major population and clinical
center in Pakistan are unaware of these reports and practices. Medical doctors remain
largely unaware of the ongoing research activities and its potential for fight against
HCV. Educating doctors and bringing them up to date about these research activities
is a must since they can act as a medium for transferring the information to the
general public. The Symposium therefore is aimed to achieve the following objectives.
- To educate and create awareness among participants (researchers, clinicians and
also general public representatives) about the latest development in HCV research.
- To provide a platform for dialogue between scientists and practicing clinical doctors
regarding HCV.
- To provide an opportunity for young Pakistani scientists to interact and learn from
distinguished and experienced researchers.
- Also to provide a medium for foreign scientists to have an insight into the quality
of work and research being conducted in Pakistan, through publication of symposium
proceedings.

BENEFITS
TO PAKISTAN
Pakistan is a developing country where heath care is a major problem. The educational
infrastructure of the country lacks linkages between not only academia and industry
but also between basic scientists and medical doctors. Symposia and conferences
of the nature as that of being proposed and organized are most importantly the first
step towards establishment of these linkages.
Bringing medical doctors and pharma-industry up to date with the ongoing applied
research against HCV infections is pivotal for evoking interest for inhouse production
of several life saving drugs. This in turn can lead to a significant decrease in
the financial burden of thousands of patients and families suffering from this disease.
General awareness among public can also be insured through transferring available
findings about HCV infections, epidemiology, risk factors, possible therapeutic
options, etc from basic scientists to medical doctors. This symposium will be helpful
in creating a platform for addressing and facilitating all the issues discussed
above.
