NUST and Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology (RIC) have
entered into an agreement for clinical support & guidance for the cardiac
devices and products being developed and produced at NUST Medical Devices
Development Centre (MDDC). The products include Bare Metal Stents (BMS), Drug
Eluting Stents (DES), Angioplasty Balloon Catheters and upcoming devices like
Diagnostic Angiographic Catheters and Heart Valves. A delegation led by Maj Gen
Azhar Mahmood Kayani (Retd), Executive Director RIC, visited NUST on May 28,
2019, to ink the agreement.
As per the agreement, the clinical team of MDDC will be
headed by Maj Gen Kayani, and this bilateral relationship will focus on the
indigenisation of cost-effective cardiovascular devices and implants for the
benefit of the general public of Pakistan.
Rector NUST, Lt Gen Naweed Zaman, HI (M), (Retd), greeted
the delegation and thanked the RIC team and Gen Kayani for joining hands with
NUST in this programme of national significance. Gen Kayani expressed his
happiness over NUST’s commitment to the noble cause of bringing expensive
medical devices within the reach of common man; he said that indigenous
production of medical devices will be a remarkable breakthrough in the
Pakistani medical devices industry.
MDDC is Pakistan’s first and only facility for indigenous
production of cardiac stents and angioplasty balloon catheters. It aims to
start commercial production of its current products very soon.
