Differently Abled Scholar Completes PhD at NUST
Ms. Lozina Shoaib, a special student, successfully completed all requirements for PhD degree in Information Technology from NUST School of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science (SEECS). Her thesis ‘Learning Technologies for the Disabled’ was evaluated by renowned professors including 2 foreign experts, Dr. Peter Charles Bloodsworth from Oxford University, UK, and Dr. Zawar Hussain Shah from Whitirea Polytechnic, Auckland, New Zealand. This research focuses on helping children with impaired hearing learn word articulation, through lip-reading, in a non-traditional yet cost-effective manner, by using a specially designed software application (LOSINA), easily within reach of patients from lower income strata of society. The improvement in natural voice quality, fluency and clear audibility of the tested words using this solution within short time span and with no formal intervention, can be endorsed as a major contribution of this research. Articulation of phrases, sentences, emphasis and emotions in conversation shall be considered as future work of her research.

During the course of her PhD, the scholar has bravely fought multiple health issues; she has undergone 22 major surgeries till date. She has earned a number of awards and honours including ‘Youth Talent Award 2008’ and ‘Quaid i Azam Gold Medal 2013.' She has appeared in 72 interviews by leading TV channels.

For NUST this is yet another milestone in its pursuit of contributing to society and humanity at large. In line with its vision and mission, NUST extends all possible support and guidance to its talented students to optimally use their capabilities. Lozina's
