Dr. Abdul Qadeer Malik is the former senior defence scientist In charge of Explosives Labs of DESTO and present Senior Faculty Member Chemical Engineering Department of SCME (NUST).  He specialized mass spectrometers especially MS-MS version (Tandem Quadruple) for kinetic studies of, inter alia, gas phase ion-molecule reactions during his doctoral work.  While in DESTO, he gained expertise in VOD measurements, Flash X-Ray Radiography and Explosives Extrusion techniques vis-à-vis indigenous development of plastic explosives and R&D studies pertaining to shaped charges including EFPs.  He has overall around fifty years Lab. and R&D, out of which thirty years is post-PhD, including over ten years academic experience for teaching and research at MS and PhD levels in NUST.  His voluminous unpublished classified research work comprises many feasibility, research and technical reports on defence projects.  Additionally, forty two research papers comprising twenty seven journal and fifteen conference papers published in journals and proceedings of international repute are at his credits during the last ten years. Nineteen MS/PhD students have so far successfully completed their degrees under his supervision.

Dr. Malik received advanced orientation and training at international level in High-tech Labs and Universities in Pakistan, the UK, Sweden, Italy and China.  He is the senior most founding member of SCME, erstwhile CCE&MS, and has rendered remarkable services during the formative years of this institution. He acted for more than a year in 2010-2011 as Head of Chemical Engineering Department (HoD) of the School. He is responsible for Curriculum Development for MS and PhD programs and is actively engaged in the supervision of MS and PhD students.  He has also been the head of the committee which developed unified course code methodology for all programs at NUST.  He is guest speaker at Inter Services fora including Ordnance School. Besides he is Director Quality Enhancement Centre and Deputy Controller Examination of this School.  Recently he was assigned a project to reutilize decanted explosives and to achieve this he cut the G​ordian Knot by developing a state-of-the-art, safe, feasible and environment-friendly process/technology for the conversion of decanted explosive into a blasting explosive for civil and military applications.  In addition he has conducted a number of projects for strategic organizations.

In recognition of his meritorious services, Government of Pakistan has decorated him with the prestigious civil medal of ‘President’s Award for Pride of Performance’ in Explosives Engineering’.  Besides, his name has been included in ‘Glaxies of who’s who in Pakistan 2007’ designated as ‘Star Laureate 2007’ by South Asia Publications.

To his laurels, the 1st PhD of the School (Dr.) Ghulam Hussain, who qualified on 26th October 2011, is Dr. Malik’s student. This heralds a new chapter in higher education as scholar is the 1st to qualify for a PhD degree in the field of ‘Energetic Materials’ in a Pakistani University.
