NUST “Plastic-Free Campus” was held on 12th November, at NIT Auditorium with the objective of cutting down the plastic consumption in NUSTand banning the use of plastic where necessary along with suggestions to reuse the plastic where possible.The seminar was followed by an activity that required teams to collect all plastic material thrown outside from NICE to IESE.Principal SCEE,Dr. Muhammad Nasrullah Khan, Representatives of schools and NUST administration also took part in the seminar.
The facilitators on hand were Mr. Adnan Shahid, NUST Alumni and the current Chief Ideas Officer (CIO) at Ideogeny and Mr. HashaamAkhtar who is a PhD Scholar and Lecturer at ASAB NUST.
Mr. HashaamAkhtar gave a very interactive and engaging presentation on the disadvantages of plastic bags, laying forward some interesting statistics explaining how our habits and daily routine contribute to ever increasing amount of plastic pilling up in the environment leaving the audience with a big question in their minds: “what can we do about it?”Mr. Adnan Shahid picked up the presentation from that question, highlighting the potential of Pakistan’snation and encouraging minor changes in our daily routinewhich significantly reduces plastic consumption and therefore its negative impacts on the environment. He brought into discussion a novel idea of road carpeting using plastic bags which is economically feasible and many other small scale projects reusing plastics. Moving further, Mr. Shahid captivated the audience yet again with a fascinating time capsule video, a message from our generation’s prominentindividuals to the generation of the 22nd century.
All in all, it was a thought provoking and inspiring event. To conclude, tokens of appreciation, recycled paper bags made by NEC executives, reflecting upon NEC’s goals and objectives, were presented to the speakers and the Chief Guest, Dr M. Nasrullah Khan. In the span of a mere hour, during the plastic collection activity the enthusiastic participants collected 25 kg of waste that comprised only of plastic, the winning team was awarded with a cash prize of Rs. 1000.The plastic collected will be used in the upcoming event of “Trash to Model Contest” to be held on 30th Nov 2012 and other initiatives being taken by NUST Environment Club.
