The Department of Urban and Regional Planning was established in 2011 under the umbrella of National Institute of Transportation (NIT), School of Civil & Environmental Engineering (SCEE), National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST), Islamabad, Pakistan, with a Master's & Doctoral degree in Urban & Regional Planning (URP). The academic session, however, began in Fall Semester (February 2013) with three trained teachers from abroad with thirteen graduate students. The world-class faculty in the department—nationally and internationally recognized scholars and leaders in community development, environmental planning, housing, land development, regional and international development, transportation, and urban design— prepare master’s and doctoral degree students to address the social, economic, and spatial relationships that shape society.
Our faculty and students are united by a shared commitment to apply an action-oriented problem-solving focused on socially, economically, environmentally and politically disadvantaged populations. We seek to promote social justice through critical analyses of public policies, plans, and programs, and the development of institutions that empower people at the grassroots.
The graduates of department can pursue careers in public planning agencies, in private consulting firms, or in university-based teaching and research positions. Moreover, they will be well prepared to take leadership roles to serve as visible role models as researchers, practitioners, and policymakers in the public, private, and non-governmental sectors.
