Head of Department Message

Welcome to the Department of Transportation Engineering at NUST Institute of Civil Engineering(NICE) of School of Civil & Environmental Engineering (SCEE). The links of department’s website are intended to acquaint you with general information on our vision, faculty profile, research activities, and the programs offered in this department.

Transport sector plays significant role in the country’s economy and very aptly considered as backbone for a strong economy and key contributor in quality of life. With over 180 million people, transport in Pakistan is one of the rapidly growing sectors and according to economic survey of Pakistan, it accounts for over 12% of gross domestic product (GDP). The annual growth of transport and communications sector in the country is over 2.0% and its employment share is 2.93 million people (or 6.4% of the labour force). Lack of requisite academic and administrative expertise available in this vital sector, stipulates training of human resource for the successful careers in the field of transportation engineering.

The department besides offering basic and depth transportation engineering courses at under graduate level, offers a distinguished MS program of graduate studies and creative research in the areas of transportation planning, transportation materials engineering, traffic engineering and operations, highway geometric and structural designs and analyses, highway safety analyses, highway infrastructure management systems and transportation economics which are geared towards improving the scientific and technological basis for transportation engineering practice in the country. The department has the state-of-the-art transportation engineering laboratories equipped with the latest field and laboratory testing equipments.

Industry-University partnership/ linkages are vital and exceptionally productive for stimulating technological innovation, improving the quality of education/ training of scientists and engineers. Industry both in public and private sectors is encouraged to collaborate with department’s researchers, making use of our highly qualified faculty, modern lab facilities and quality research students. Currently, the department's research team is jointly spearheading the comprehensive pavement study program in collaboration with NHA’s Highway Research & Training Center to evolve the Asphalt Mix Design Technology for Pakistan. Also, our research programs cross the boundaries of the university and the country for collaborative research with faculties in foreign Universities.

Finally, I would like to invite you to browse through our website and feel free to contact me with any queries or additional information that you may desire.
