Seminar / Photo Exhibition – Pakistan Role in United Nations Peacekeeping Operations

To commemorate the sacrifices of Pakistan’s soldiers In UN Peacekeeping missions, a seminar cum Photo exhibition was held in Centre for International Peace and Stability, CIPS / NUST. Additional Secretary United Nations and Economic Council, MoFA, Amb Tasnim Aslam was the Chief Guest. The seminar had four Guest Speakers all of whom had played multi dimensional role in UN Peacekeeping. The proceeding of the seminar started with the welcome remarks by the Pro-Rector Major General Muhammed Shahid (Retd). Thereafter, the first speaker, Brigadier Khalid Saeed, Director Military Operations, Military Operations Directorate, GHQ spoke on Pakistan Army role in Global Peacekeeping. It included historical perspective, contributions made in enhancing Pakistan’s role in Peacekeeping and Pakistan perspective on future UN Peacekeeping Missions.
Brig Dr Tughral Yamin (Retd) shared his views on Pakistan participation in UN Peacekeeping Operations as a National policy and Pakistan operations in Somalia which paved the way of reintegration of Pakistan in the comity of Nations.
Lieutenant General Sikander Afzal (Retd) deliberated on a very pertinent topic regarding Protection of Civilians and highlighted gaps between UN capabilities and expectations. Ambassador Masood Khan was the last Guest speaker who shared his views on various UN reviews and their implications on future Peacekeeping operations
The Chief Guest Ambassador Tasnim Aslam, in her closing remarks while commending MO Directorate and CIPS efforts for holding the Seminar / Photo Exhibition said that Pakistan’s commitments, dedication and professionalism to UN Peacekeeping has been widely appreciated by the international community over the years.
The seminar activity concluded with the presentations of mementoes to the guest speakers and the Chief Guest.
The participants included Senior Diplomats / DAs, Reps from UN organizations/ Think Tanks, Representative from Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Interior, Allied Officers from NDU, Officers from GHQ, Blue Berets and Faculty and Students from NUST.
The Seminar was followed by a Photo Exhibition which had nine different stalls including Current Pakistan Missions, Officers who had leadership role in UN Peacekeeping, List/ Photos of soldiers who sacrificed for Peace, Acknowledge of world leaders of our mission and Journey through past.
