​Dr. Ashraf Masood completed his BE Telecommunication Engineering, from UET Lahore, with gold medal for securing first position in academics. He completed MS Electrical Engineering and PhD Electrical Engineering from Michigan State University, USA in 1990 and 1992 respectively. He is teaching in MCS - NUST since 1992. Brig Ashraf has also served MCS as CI(E)/ Dean MCS from 2009 to 2015. Currently, he is adjunct faculty at Dept of IS, MCS.​

​1. Indigenous Designing & development of Virtual Private Network (VPN) Encryption System
  • The project aimed at securing IT infrastructure by providing IP layer 3 Security by implementing through purpose-built cryptographic accelerator hardware boards in high speed server class machines.
  • The project was done under PC-1 sponsored by Ministry of IT & Telecom through NUST (Rs. 7.0 Millions).
  • 2. Indigenous Designing & development of Computer Network Security Gateway (CNSG)
  • The product is derivative of VPN Encryption System. The project aimed at provisioning of indigenously built cryptographic security to a large computer network project through an IP layer-3 encryption with customized cryptographic algorithm built into purpose-built cryptographic accelerator hardware boards along with a comprehensive Key Management System (KMS).
  • The project was sponsored by GHQ (Rs. 12.0 Millions).
  • 3. Indigenous Designing & development of Multi-Channel Speech Compression System
  • The project aimed at efficient utilization of Microwave Communication System bandwidth whereby 4x 2Mbps voice streams were compressed into a single 2 Mbps stream. Thereby saving costly microwave communication equipment and related infrastructure.
  • The project was done vide PC-1 sponsored by Ministry of IT & Telecom through NUST (Rs. 7.17 Millions).
  • 4. Indigenous Designing & development of Integrated Military Messaging System (IMS)
  • Developed as secure and customized Integrated Military Messaging System for the Army. Fundamentally, it is a server-less customized secure e-mail system.
  • Can use multiple media including IP NW, PSTN, Radio, line, off-line etc and automated to work without operator at Receive end. Fully authentic, encrypted with self destruction feature.
  • 5. Indigenous Designing & development of Digital Map Security System
  • An indigenous customized solution has been developed for the security of digital maps on CDROM media for distribution in various government services.
  • The project provided cryptographic security to digital map data that can be decrypted by an authorized user in possession of smart card.
  • In addition, the solution provides accounting & tracking data for all CDROMs and smart cards distributed to all users.
  • 6. Revitalization of Manufacturing of VHF Radio Set AN/PRC-77 at NRTC
  • Manufacturing of AN/PRC-77 got held up at NRTC due to poor quality electronic component supply. This resulted in acute shortage of equipment in the Army and other services on one side and blockage of huge revenue to NRTC.
  • Myself conducted an experimental analytic study and revived a stock of over 1000 radio sets.
  • The work has helped recover over hundred million rupees of lost revenue to NRTC. The undersigned was awarded Commendation Certificate by NRTC (1996)
  • 7. Cyber Screening of HF Frequency Hopping Radio Set RF-5800H ex M/s Harris, USA
  • The project aimed at analysis/verification of the radio set RF-5800H against malicious operation and/or communication.
  • Lead a team for this project to conduct the screening process in two phases.
  • The work comprised on analysis of all commands applicable on the radio ports, all transmissions, validation of source code and physical tests/trials.
  • 8. ECCM and Cryptographic Customization – HF Frequency Hopping Radio Set ex M/s Harris, USA
  •  The project aimed at cryptographic customization of COMSEC and TRANSEC sub-systems of the radio set.
  • Developed a customized cryptographic algorithm for COMSEC and implemented in the radio set with help of team of two officers.
  • 9. ECCM Sub-system Customization of VHF Frequency Hopping Radio Set ex M/s Aselsan, Turkey
  • Supervised a team who customized the cryptographic algorithm, Freq Hopping mechanism and Frequency Hopping synchronization scheme.
  • All the implementation was in software (firmware of the ECCM module hardware)
  • The product was certified by NTISB.
  • 10. ECCM Sub-system Development of VHF Frequency Hopping Radio Set
  • Supervised a team to develop a complete ECCM module (hardware and software) for the radio sets held with Pakistan Defense Services.
  • 11. Designing & Development of Cryptographic Algorithm – Mystery-IV
  • Indigenously designed and developed a unique cryptographic algorithm for high-grade security devices for use in defense service and other Govt depts. Mystery-IV has been thoroughly tested for over three years using various cryptanalytic tools including those developed in-house.
  • 12. Development of Customized Cryptographic Algorithm and Software for Cryptographic Customization – BEU ex M/s Ericsson
  • Developed a customized cryptographic algorithm and related software for the foreign cryptographic equipment.
  • 13. Development of Customized Cryptographic Algorithm and Software for Cryptographic Customization of Speech Secrecy Equipment ex M/s Ericsson
  • Developed a customized cryptographic algorithm and related software for the foreign cryptographic equipment to provide speech secrecy on wireless communication system.
  • 14. Development of Customized Cryptographic Algorithm and Software for Cryptographic Customization of Indigenously developed BEU
  • Developed and incorporated customized embedded cryptographic algorithm and its related software into the hardware manufactured indigenously.
  • So far, two versions of the software have been developed since 1998.
  • 15. Development of Customized Frequency Hopping Sequence Generator and associated Security Software – HF Freq Hopping Radio Set Panther-H ex M/s RACAL, UK
  • Developed and incorporated customized embedded freq hopping sequence generator and synchronization algorithms and its related software into the radio set hardware.
  • 16. Cryptographic Customization – Computer Data Network Security System ex M/s CEIEC, China
  • Lead the team to dev the customized cryptographic algorithm and related software for the subject product procured for the security of a large computer network project.
  • 17. Indigenous Designing & Development of Key Management System (KMS)
  • Designed and developed a unique hardware based cryptographic Key Management System (KMS) as companion equipment for high-grade security devices to be used in defense services and other Government departments. KMS has been thoroughly tested for over three years using various cryptanalytic tools including those dev in-house.
  • 18. Indigenous Designing & Development of Secrecy Sub-system of VHF Radio Set AN/PRC-77 (Upgraded)
  • The project aimed at digitization, refurbishment and up-gradation of VHF Radio set AN/PRC-77. The project was undertaken in collaboration with industrial partnership of M/s And-Or Logic Pakistan (Pvt) Ltd, Islamabad. The undersigned worked on provisioning of speech secrecy to otherwise plain radio set as part of up-gradation. The work included indigenous designing and developed the electronic hardware of the secrecy sub-system, cryptographic algorithm and related synchronization protocol along with their implementation as firmware. Finally, the secrecy sub-system was integrated into the upgraded radio set.
  • The product was completed and commercialized through National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC).
  • 19. Designing and Dev of Integrated Computerized Encryption System (CES)
  • The product has been developed indigenously as Crypto Machine to replace old vintage crypto machines in the Army, defense services and Govt agencies under a PC-1 sponsored by Ministry of S&T through NUST.
  • Later phase of the project was undertaken in collaboration with industrial partnership of M/s And-Or Logic Pakistan (Pvt) Ltd, Islamabad.
  • Awarded COAS Commendation Card on successful completion of the project
  • The product was completed and commercialized through National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC).
  • 20. Indigenous Designing, Development and Manufacturing of Hybrid Ringer Converter Sub-System for Deltamux 8TR610
  • The project aimed at re-living and revitalization of digital multiplexing equipment 8TR610 currently used in Pak Armed Forces by upgrading its magneto dialing facility to automatic dialing facility. A special purpose Automatic Hybrid and Ringer Converter Sub-System was indigenously developed to bring the main equipment in-line with modern communication equipment used in the field.
  • The product was completed and commercialized through National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC).
  • 21. Indigenous Designing & Development of Key Fill Device (KFD) for Key Management System (KMS)
  • It is a unique hardware based cryptographic Key Fill Device (KFD) as companion equipment of Key Management System (KMS) for high-grade security devices. The product is being used with several systems being used in the Army and other defense services. The project was undertaken in collaboration with industrial partnership of M/s And-Or Logic Pakistan (Pvt) Ltd, Islamabad.
  • The product has been commercialized through National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC), Haripur.
  • 22. Designing & Development of Indigenous BEU for Multiple CEPT E1 data Traffic with Customized Cryptographic Algorithm
  • Developed and incorporated customized embedded cryptographic algorithm and its related software into the hardware manufactured indigenously.
  • Two version of BEUs have been developed one each for Dual and Quad CEPT E1 interfaces.
  • The project was undertaken in collaboration with industrial partnership of M/s And-Or Logic Pakistan (Pvt) Ltd, Islamabad.
  • The product has been commercialized through Micro Electronics International Industries (MEI), Lahore.
  • 23. Designing & Development of Indigenous BEU for IP data Traffic with Customized Cryptographic Algorithm
  • Developed and incorporated customized embedded cryptographic algorithm and its related software into the hardware manufactured indigenously.
  • Two versions of IP BEUs have been developed one each for FE and GbE.
  • The project was undertaken in collaboration with industrial partnership of M/s And-Or Logic Pakistan (Pvt) Ltd, Islamabad.
