Seminar on “Landslides Analysis & Mitigation”

at Risalpur Military College of Engineering (MCE)


A one day seminar titled “LANDSLIDES ANALYSIS & MITIGATION” was conducted by Dr. Manzoor Hussain Chief Consultant Engineer (Civil)DD&C,Engineer-in-Chief Branch, GHQ Rawalpindi. Dr. Manzoor Hussain is a teacher and scholar of international repute. He had been Head of Department in the discipline of Transportation and Geotech at MCE Risalpur. He has done his Masters and PhD in Civil Engg (Geotech) from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a top ranked university in Civil Engineering within USA. He has published various technical papers in ASCE Journal of Geotechnical & Geo environmental Engg, and ASCE Geotechnical Special Publications. Dr. Manzoor is the first honored Pakistani scholar who has won three major international awards. He has twice received “Richard S. Ladd Standard Development Award” from ASTM, one for developing “ASTM D-7608” and second for revising “ASTM D-6467.” He has won “Thomas A. Middlebrooks Award” from ASCE for his outstanding publication titled “Shear Strength for Preexisting Landslides” in 2010. Dr. Manzoor has been listed in “Who is Who in the World” by Marquis, a US biography publisher. He has developed mathematical based empirical correlations for drained residual and fully softened friction angles of clay soils. He was a recipient of “Ralph B. Peck Fellowship Award” on outstanding performance at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Manzoor has been co-speaker with Professor Timothy D. Stark, USA, for invited lectures at different chapters of Geo-Institute, ASCE, USA.  < class="my-rteElement-Normalize">Analysis and behavior of landslides is his main area of interest whereas he has interests in designing excavation support system for deep excavations, geotechnical investigations, and laboratory testing.< class="my-rteElement-Normalize">The main purpose of this session was to help civil engineers to understand the mechanism of landslide occurrence, design and back-analysis of landslides, planning landslide mitigation and remedial measures, and understanding uncertainties involved in the back-analysis of the landslides. < class="my-rteElement-Normalize">The participants earned 1.0 point as this seminar was approved as CPD activity by PEC and Certificates were also awarded to the participants of the seminar.
