About Department
DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING

The Department of Transportation and Geotechnical Engineering is committed to impart latest knowledge and quality education related to Transportation Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering and Engineering Geology.

The Department under highly qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty is excelling to produce good quality engineers who can serve the nation in a befitting manner. Previously only two mandatory courses each in Transportation and Geotechnical Engineering were being offered. Most recently new elective courses of international standards both in Transportation and Geotechnical Engineering have been introduced and being taught at MCE.

Mandatory courses in both Transportation and Geotechnical Engineering provide basic level education essentially required for a Civil Engineer. Whereas advance level courses in both the areas being offered as elective courses from 6th semester onwards provide opportunity to the students to major in a particular area.

Lectures are delivered by the faculty in the classrooms using state of the art teaching aids. Laboratory tests follow the lectures and are conducted in the laboratories under well trained, very experienced staff and under the direct supervision of respective faculty. Most of the courses require learning and using of different software packages related to Transportation and Geotechnical Engineering thus developing computer skills in the students to make them proficient in handling different problems in the practical life.

At MCE, we have Transportation and Geotechnical Engineering Laboratories equipped with large variety of necessary testing apparatus required at undergraduate level. We also have Software Laboratory containing all necessary software for both Transportation and Geotechnical Engineering. Geology Laboratory is also state of the art laboratory contains a large variety of rock samples and geological models.
Academic Courses

All the courses being taught at MCE conform to the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) standards and are accredited on regular basis. Under Unified Framework of Engineering Education (UFEE) list of courses being offered by this department is as follows:

RESEARCH
MCE was only running UG program in Civil Engineering till 2012 therefore no meaningful and coordinated research could be conducted by the students. However, devoted faculty members carried out research at their own. The research has been published in the form of technical papers in the international repute peer-reviewed journals and has also been presented in the international conferences.

Most recently, the final year projects completed by the undergraduate students show an increased trend in picking up topics related to Transportation and Geotechnical Engineering. Thirteen (13) syndicates out of 25 from the Graduating Class of 2012 had completed projects in Transportation and Geotechnical Engineering under the supervision of highly qualified faculty. Most of the projects covered problems related to Pakistan. Overall trend in completing the final year projects has also been shifted from application of knowledge to some basic level research which has become a source of inspiration for the students.

One of the projects completed by the students titled ““Geotechnical Evaluation of Attabad Landslide Dam” has been presented in International Conference “Earth Sciences of Pakistan-2012” held on 22-23 June 2012 at Baragali Summer Campus of University of Peshawar, Abbotabad, Pakistan. The abstract has also been published in Volume 45(2) - Abstract Volume of Journal of Himalayan Earth Sciences National Centre of Excellence in Geology, University of Peshawar, Pakistan. The same is being submitted to international journal for possible publication.
