​Unmanned Vehicles (UVs) Group

Generally, the vehicle will have a set of sensors to observe the environment, and will either autonomously make decisions about its behavior or pass the information to a human operator at a different location who will control the vehicle through tele-operation. Unmanned robotics is being actively developed for both civilian and military use to perform a variety of dull, dirty, and dangerous activities. At the moment the research is being carried out in the domain of tele-operated unmanned ground vehicle and unmanned lead vehicle.

Bio Medical Group

The Bio Medical  group projects aim towards development of brain controlled using EEG signals, EMG signals&  body powered and tendon activated upper arm & lower limb prosthesis. The projects will lead to low cost prosthetic arm & legs as a product for people with upper limb amputation. Recently the design of a hybrid body powered prosthetic limb has been locked for AFIRM. This arm will be handed over to AFIRM for a period of 2 months for extensive testing. After the testing period The feedback will be incorporated into the project and the design will be put into fabrication phase for marketing purpose.

Automotive Control Research Group

The group is focused on carrying out research on automotive diagnostic system being used by vehicle manufacturers.  This group main focus is on military vehicles diagnostics, and also extending its research towards commercial vehicles.  This group has started focusing on development of a communication hub from where all vehicles (in communication) can be monitored for malfunction. Moreover, this group is also involved in development of control units of Pakistan Army’s main battle tanks.

Robotics and Intelligent SYSTEMS (RIS) Group

The group is focused on carrying out research in multiple domains of robotics involving multi-agent systems, Mobile robot navigation and planning and Force control of robotic manipulators and legged vehicles, analysis and control of robotic manipulators. In addition to this the group is also focused on computational vision, particularly in the areas of detection, tracking, motion estimation, pattern and object recognition.  This group will also focus on tele-robotics, a system that will allow remote operation of a 5-DOF robotic arm via internet will be established.

Manufacturing Automation (MA) Group

Research group is on advanced manufacturing technologies that include Flexible Manufacturing cells, Lean/Green Manufacturing, Web Based Manufacturing, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Programmable logic Controllers and Optimum Technology Strategies. This groups aims at developing and providing optimum solutions to the local industry.

Micro- ElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS)

MEMS Research is focused on different micro level device and system designs, finite element simulations, micro fabrication and testing.  Examples include MEMS micro mirrors for use in biomedical imaging applications.  Moreover, system level implementation of micro mirrors include an overall integration with embedded waveguides, photo detectors and super luminescent diodes (SLD) to develop a miniaturized optical coherence tomography (OCT) chip.  In addition, investigation on non-destructive testing methods for structural buildings using micro-sensors is also included.

Precision Engineering Research  Group (PERG)

Pakistan is an agricultural country with more than 60% of the population dependent on it for their survival. Despite supporting an agrarian economy, one of the biggest challenges facing the agriculture sector is the low per acre yield due to the lack of using precision agricultural techniques. There is a huge opportunity for innovators and entrepreneurs to bring ideas that can help to integrate information system, current mobile network, and sensor/actuators equipped automated machines and mobile platforms to bring a system that can revolutionize precision agriculture in Pakistan.

Our precision engineering robotics group (PERG) at the department of mechatronics, college of electrical and mechanical engineering is working on different problems in precision agriculture that include the design and development of mini teleoperated harvesters, intelligent pesticide spraying unit for ground vehicles, on tree fruit quality and quantity estimations, smart mobile based application for sugarcane pest and disease detection, and aerial drone for crop monitoring and pesticide spraying. We are working closely with Pakistan agriculture research council, center for fundamental research, Central Queensland University Australia, and Asian Institute of Technology Solutions Thailand.

 Micro and Nano Robotics Research Group

Micro and nano robotics is an exciting and emerging research field with vast spectrum of applications such as drug delivery and discovery, defense, space exploration, invasive surgery, micro/nano manipulation, removal of biopsy samples and surveillance etc. The study of micro/nano robotics involves robots that are micro/nanoscale in size and macro robots that are capable of manipulating objects in the micro/nanoscale. Therefore, this filed is multidisciplinary including nanofabrication, nanoactuators, nanosensors, and physics at micro/nano scales. The primary research directions of the Micro and Nano Robotic Research Group is design, simulation, development and testing of Atomic force microscopy based nano-robotic systems and magnetically actuated micro robotic systems for micro/nano manipulations and targeted drug delivery, respectively. The group is also actively engaged on the development of Quartz tuning fork force sensor for micro and nano robotics applications.
