Dr. Farhan Riaz did his graduation (Bachelor in Computer Engineering) from National University of Sciences and Technology, Islamabad, Pakistan. He served at Center for Advanced Research in Engineering as a Design Engineer before pursuing his higher education (Master of Science in Communications Engineering) at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. During his Master’s, he worked part time (student work) at the NTT DoCoMo, Munich labs and the Intel Munich office. After finishing his MS, he proceeded to Portugal to pursue his PhD from the University of Porto, Portugal where he finished his PhD with Distinction. Since then, he is working as an Assistant Professor at the National University of Sciences and Technology, Islamabad, Pakistan where he is teaching programming courses to the undergraduate degree students, and advanced courses on image processing and medical imaging. During his PhD, he spent about 3 months doing research at the Computer Vision Centre (CVC) at the University of Autonoma Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain under the supervision of Dr. Fernando Vilarino. Since the completion of his PhD, Dr. Farhan Riaz has made several research visits to Portugal for pursuing his research interests.

​Current area of research is computer-assisted diagnosis for gastroenterology. Gastrointestinal (GI) cancer is considered as one of the deadliest form of cancer. Endoscopy of GI tract is a diagnostic procedure which is used to view the digestive tract and identify any suspicious regions which could evolve to cancer. The objective is to identify those regions automatically and provide a fast, accurate, consistent system for diagnosis.

•    Signal Processing: We have focused on the processing of various biomedical signals, specifically Photoplethysmogram (PPG) and Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. In PPG signals, we are focusing on the detection of blood pressure abnormalities whereas in EEG signals, we have focused on movement related cortical potentials and epilepsy detection.
•    Image Analysis: We have focused on various applications in image analysis. In specific, we have focused on feature extraction from Gastroenterology and Dermoscopy images, and segmentation of the same imaging modalities. Additionally, the work is also focused on heart ultrasound videos.
