International Workshop on Air Quality Monitoring and Global Warming Trends at SCEE
An International Workshop on Air Quality Monitoring and Global Warming Trends in Pakistan was held at IESE, SCEE from Nov 15 to 16 in collaboration with Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies, Kyoto University, Max-Planck Institute for Chemistry, Mainz and Institute of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, NUST. The workshop was a part of NUST’s efforts to address the environmental issues of Pakistan and was productive in briefing the need to revisit the existing air quality management procedures and global warming trends particularly in Pakistan in addition to a global perspective.
 
Different speakers from IESE, Pakistan Met Department and Germany gave lectures on the current scenario. Sessions included “Over arching initiatives of Government of Pakistan on Climate Change by Syd. M. Hussain (MoCC),” “Global Warming Trends in Pakistan by Dr. Ghulam Rasool, PMD Pakistan”, “Global Warming and Global trends of Water Vapours by Prof. Dr. Thomas Wagner, Germany”, “Climate Change in Pakistan, Impacts & Possible Remedial Strategies by Mr. Munir Sheikh GCiSC”, “Monitoring Atmospheric Composition using LIF by Prof. Dr. Yoshizumi Kajii, Japan,” “Introduction to car MAX-DOAS techniques by Dr. Muhammad Fahim Khokhar, NUST” and finally “Status of Climate Change Research in Pakistan by Mr. Ali. T. Sheikh, LEADS Pakistan”. The workshop also featured a field visit to Punjab University, Lahore and back with the object of data acquisition and student training. A short field campaign around the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad was conducted by using Max-
DOAS spectrometer mounted on mobile platform. Participants got hands on training to operate the spectrometer and analysis of the field observations. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between Max-Planck-Institute for Chemistry, Mainz,
Germany and the Institute of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (IESE) in which both parties agreed to perform joint atmospheric measurements applying the MAX-DOAS technique and to exchange relevant knowledge (including software) and publications on these kinds of observations. Prof. Dr. Thomas Wagner, Head Satellite Remote sensing Group, Max-Planck-Institute signed on behalf of the Max- Planck-Institute while Dr. Nasarullah Khan, Principal SCEE was IESE’s signatory. German DAAD Head Miss Ursula Sahrback also attended the ceremony.
According to recent reports from German watch Global Climate Risk Index (2012), Pakistan is among the top ten countries most affected by extreme weather events with adverse socio-economic impacts. Such events also slow down the pace of development in countries like Pakistan. Hence, it is strongly needed to implement efficient but cost effective strategies in order to cope with impacts of such extreme events and climate change. The workshop provided a platform for such measures.
